  1. I have been told that my g.g.granddather-
Danford Ferguson, had to use the name Peter Cody while in service. No one seems to know why? So do I look up his birth name or the name he was given to use while in service?

    • You should double-check that story of “had to use another name.” That’s often the story that gets handed down in the family when what actually happened was that he served as a substitute for the other man.

Civil War drafts were incredibly unpopular. When a man was drafted, he could serve or pay someone else to go in his place. That substitute served in their own name, not in the name of the person who was drafted. If that’s the case with your ancestor, he would have served under his name of Danford Ferguson, not Peter Cody.
